Co-design editor of the leading fashion, arts, and culture magazine at the University of Michigan.

Overview

Founded in 1999 as an Asian pop culture magazine, SHEI is an entirely student-run fashion and pop-culture publication at the University of Michigan. SHEI publishes a bi-annual print magazine and SHEI Digital, a free, monthly digital magazine.

My role

As the co-design editor, I led a team of 10 designers to create design assets and magazine layouts for SHEI’s digital and print publications. In addition to my design responsibilities, I led meetings, facilitated critiques, and edited final magazine issues adhering to brand style guidelines.

Process

The repeatable review process for each magazine layout design involves input from editors and designers. This collaborative feedback loop enhances design quality and efficiency. Below is the design process I co-led as a design editor:

  • Creative brief and project assignment: The design editors present the team with the creative concept for the next issue. Editors allow designers to choose the feature or photoshoot layout they want to design.

  • Initial design drafts: Editors and designers develop two first draft layout options based on the content.

  • Internal review: Each design undergoes an internal review by the editors and design team. The synchronous, discussion-based critique format facilitates an environment for constructive feedback and learning opportunities.

  • Iteration and revision: Based on the feedback received, designers iterate on their initial designs, making necessary revisions to address any issues or suggestions.

  • Final approval: Once all revisions have been made and the design meets the editors’ approval, it is finalized for publication.

  • Quality assurance and publication: The editors combine all final, approved designs and prepare the magazine for final delivery. For digital issues, design editors conduct a final review before publishing the magazine on SHEI’s website. Meanwhile, for print issues, design editors hold additional review sessions with board members before final print proofs and production.
